For decades,UN has undergone constant winds of change in the world,grown along the road of twists and turns,and made great contributions to the peace and prosperity of the human beings.It has obtained remarkable achievements in fields such as realizing global decolonization,defending world peace and security,promoting social and economic development,and so on.By the time of June,2006,the number of its member states has mounted up from 51 when it was born to 192,growing the most universal,authoritative,intergovernmental organization of sovereign states.According to the datum released by UN,it has authorized over 60 peace-keeping operations since 1948.Meanwhile,it has organized and constituted hundreds of international treaties from the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) to the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
UN and its agencies has been the core of persisting and carrying through the objectives of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.It offers assistance to states transferring to democracy,including supervising and assisting in free and fair elections,improving the judicial system,drafting constitutions and training human rights officials.United Nations agencies have made outstanding contributions to the global democratization.
It also supports the improvement of women’s rights.From the year of 1985,the idea of gender mainstreaming started emerging at the United Nations,one aim of which was to encourage women’s active participation in politics,economy,and social life of their countries.
On December 20th,the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council agreed to set up a new agency,United Nations Peace-building Commission,to help keep countries that have just got rid of wars away from new conflicts.
On March 9th,2006,UN held a ceremony and officially launched the central emergency response fund to provide financial assurance for immediate rescue after natural disasters.
