Fast Food Scraps Threaten Rat Plague?
Britain is facing a sharp rise in its rat population as growing numbers of people leave fast food scraps in the street,an environment group warned.Keep Britain Tidy said the rodents were abandoning their traditional haunts underground and were roaming the streets, enticed by discarded remnants of burgers, pizzas and crisps."The rat population is on the rise and soon it'll be as common to see a rodent on our street as it is to see a dog or a cat," said group Director,Sue Nelson. The practice of dumping fast food litter and scraps on the street rather than in the trash - with young men the worst offenders - was behind the rise.According to the National Rodent Survey in 2001,Britain's rat population has grown by nearly one quarter since 1998 and is now estimated at 60 million, two million more than the human population. On average a rat can give birth every 24-28 days and just a single pair of rats can produce a colony of 2,000 a year.Around 200 Britons a year contract Weil's Disease - an infection which can lead to kidney or liver failure and eventually death and which is carried in rat's urine. To highlight the issue,Keep Britain Tidy launched a cinema advert entitled "How close do you want them to get?" The ad culminates in a shocking image of a young woman sleeping in a bed of rats - echoing the nightmare scenario from James Herbert's classic horror tale The Rats,in which mutant rodents begin to prey on humans.

Inside the Russian Embassy in London a KGB colonel puffed a cigarette as he read the handwritten note for the third time. There was no need for the writer to express regret, he though. Correcting this problem would be easy. He would do that in a moment. The thought of it caused a grim smile to appear and joy to his heart. But he pushed away those thoughts and turned his attention to a framed photograph on his desk. His wife was beautiful, he told himself as he remembered the day they were married. That was forty-three years ago, and it had been the proudest and happiest day of his life.
What had happened to all that time? Why had it passed so quickly, and why hadn't he spent more of it with her? Why hadn't he held her close and told her more often that he loved her? He cursed himself as a tear came from the corner of his eye, ran down his cheek, then dropped onto the note. He stiffened and wiped his face with the back of his hand. There was no need for remorse or regret, he told himself. In a few moments he would join her and at that time would express his undying love and devotion.
After setting the note ablaze he dropped it into an ashtray and watched it burn. For a time the names cast moving shadows on the walls of the darkened room, then they nickered and died out. The colonel dropped the cigarette to the floor and ground it out with his heel, then clutched the photograph to his breast, removed a pistol from his pocket, placed the barrel in his mouth and pulled the trigger. In the ashtray a small portion of the note remained. Where it had been wetted by his tear it had failed to bum, and on that scrap of paper were the words "died yesterday."
Bob Goes to the Dentist
Today is my first dentist appointment.
I really do not want to go.
My mom says,“You must go to keep your teeth healthy.”
The dentist‘s office is nice.
There are lots of toys to play with.
A toy train chugs on the floor.
“Choo!Choo!”
The nurse calls,“Bob.”
I cry because I am scared.
The nice nurse smiles and says,
“It will be all right!”
The dentist smiles at me.
He lets me ride up and down in the chair.
This is fun!
“Now,let‘s look at your teddy bear’s teeth.”
I look at my teddy bear‘s teeth,too.
On the ceiling is a TV.
I watch a cartoon show.
The dentist brushes and cleans my teeth.
The cartoon show is over,now.
The dentist is done,too.
“It was not so bad.”
The nice nurse gives me a toy surprise!
My teddy bear gets a sticker, too.
Now,I like going to the dentist.
My teddy bear does,too!

How a Colt Crossed the River
One day, a colt took a bag of wheat to the mill. As he was running with the bag on his back, he came to a small river. The colt could not decide whether he could cross it. Looking around, he saw a cow grazing nearby. He asked, “Aunt Cow, could you tell me if I can cross the river?” The cow told him that he could and that the river was not very deep, just knee high.
The colt was crossing the river when a squirrel jumped down fron a tree and stopped him. The squirrel shouted, “Colt, stop! You’ll drown! One of my friends drowned just yesterday in the river.” Not knowing what to do, the colt went home to consult his mum.
He told his mum his experience on the way. His mother said, “My child, don’t always listen to others. You’d better go and try yourself. Then you’ll know what to do.” Later, at the river, the squirrel stopped the colt again. “Little horse, it’s too dangerous!” “No, I want to try myself,” answered the colt. Then he crossed the river carefully.
You see, real knowledge comes from practice.
