As per Atamert and Bhadeshia [19] Si is ferrite stabilizer,it retains Cr in the matrix.
However in XRD research Cr is precipitated in presence of high amount of Si.
This is contradictory to results of Atamert and Bhadeshia.
The reason may be due to different composition of hardfacing alloy i.e.high Mn content of the alloy.
Considering case of sample 1 and sample 4,where Mo content is varied with same Si (2 %) content,
there is increase in hardness,hence Mo is strengthening the matrix.
This is in accordance with Xinhong et al.[20]
who stated that Mo addition induce solid solution hardening element and also contributes to
strength via precipitation hardening by forming MC and M2C carbides.
The precipitation impedes the movement of dislocations and hence produces hardening effect in the
hardfacing layer.
5.1.2 Sample CS-31
Microstructure analysis of CP-29 sample 2 and sample 3 is shown in Fig.5a and 2b respectively.
Also XRD analysis of sample 2 and sample 3 is shown in Figs.6 and 7 respectively.
However in case of high Mo content (5 %) considering case sample 2 and sample 3,
increase Si content has decreased hardness (36–22 HRC).
When high amount of Si and Mo are present in low Mn alloy hardfacing composition,
there is formation of soft phases.
XRD analysis indicates formation of FeSi2 responsible for decrease
in hardness.XRD analysis of sample 4 indicates peak
broadening of Fe7C3 precipitate,i.e.system of the precipitate
is small which may be responsible for increase in hardness (Table 11).
