区别：
过去进行时表示过去某时间点或某时间段内的一个动作正在进行,过去进行时则强调动作的持续时间；而过去完成时表示过去某时前事情已经发生（即表示过去的过去）,句中有明显的参照动作或时间状语,这种时态从来不孤立使用 ( before,after,by,up till ) .
在when引导的时间状语从句中,主从句分别有两个动作,如果两个动作同时都在发生,那么主句就用过去进行时；如果有很明显的先后顺序的话,先发生的就用过去完成时.
例如：I was writing a letter when she called.她打来电话时我正在写信.（动作在进行）
The play had already started when we got to the theatre.我们到剧院时戏已经开始了.
