A sharp earth tremor rocked Britain and Ireland yesterday, shaking buildings, felling chimney pots and jolting millions of people in the region’s heaviest quake in more than 50 years.
The tremor, which lasted up to 30 seconds in northwestern England, caused widespread minor damage but no casualties were reported immediately except two elderly women treated for shock in Liverpool.
“ I was in a deep sleep when I felt a tremendous rocking sensation,” Jonathan Wilde who lives in a 22nd-floor apartment in the city of Wolverhampton said, “ then I was hit by a plant that I unfortunately have near to my bed. ”
Police and emergency services reported their switchboards jammed by worried callers immediately after the tremor at 7:57 a.m. They reported their homes shaking, chimney pots falling off roofs and furniture and china rattling.
One News Service said its 8th floor of office in central London swayed several times shortly before 8 a.m.
